Russell Johnson Interview
Переглядів 3,6 тис.5 років тому
Did you know that "The Professor," Russell Johnson earned the Purple Heart in WWII? Or that he worked in movies with Ronald Reagan? You'll hear about those things and much more from this interview I did with him at WGLD, Indianapolis in 1999. We spent most of the day with Mr. Johnson, which included sitting in with us for the entire morning show, and then out to a boat store, where he signed au...
Lost Peter Tork 1999 Interview

An extensive and wide-ranging interview with Peter Tork from 1999. Peter came to WGLD, Indianapolis for a morning interview, and then signed autographs for fans later that day. Okay, this interview wasn't exactly "lost." It aired once, live in 1999, and the recording has been in a box in my closet on a cassette ever since. I just listened for the first time, after 20 years. All of us at the sta...

McDonald's Drive-Thru Ripoff

At this McDonald's in Gilroy, CA, the drive-through cashier tried to scam me out of a dollar. First clue something was wrong was when the menu items and total did not appear on the screen (this is out of view of my dash-cam.) Then she told me "I'll have your total at the first window." I think this is so she could see if I was paying by cash or credit. When she saw I was paying with cash, she c...

    The guy is in a two engine bomber, extremely loud engines, a hundred feet high at around 250 mph, and a cannon shell explodes, kills the guy next to him, and breaks his ankles. Then he has to belt in and prepare for a water landing/crash. Crashes, gets out, helps another injured crewman into a raft, and is picked up an hour later by a flying boat. Several hours of flying later, he is delivered to a base hospital. Mind blowing to go through all that and survive and be lucky enough to go on, raise a family, do good work, and live a good life. RIP

    Pacific Recorders console on KFYR Auditronics 110 console on KYYY, ITC Delta cart decks, ElectroVoice RE20 mics, and were those Revox A77's in the rack in the next room? What did they do? Yes, this was a typical late 80's radio station. I have a console very similar to the KFYR console in my home studio now. It still works perfectly, and it gets a lot of TLC. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

    Nice! Bruce does an excellent job..people do not realize what we as DJ's/Broadcasters go through behind the scenes,..so him making it appear seamless is excellent on his part. The process has since been updated, but as you can see, we wear many hats. Rock On, Bruce!!

    I love Russell, thanks for posting this great interview! BTW, when Russell worked with Reagan, Reagan was a Democrat, lol. BTW, @16:10 they are asking him why the Professor never fixed the boat. He didn't say this on the radio, but at Harvard he said why would he want to fix the boat when he was with two hot women on an island? lol

    • @jkorshak
      @jkorshak 18 днів тому

      It wasn't as simple as partisan party politics. Reagan was a democrat but by the time Johnson did the western with Reagan, Reagan was an Eisenhower supporter and he was an influential force behind the Hollywood blacklist of the late 1940s-50's.

    Why do you record the winning caller instead of doing it just live air with no edits?

    • @Brucieee1
      @Brucieee1 9 місяців тому

      Thanks for asking, and that's a good question! First, at that station, we were instructed to avoid any surprises that listeners might try to do if they were live on-air, like swearing and other stuff that could get the station fined the FCC. They do enforce that, especially if it's on a huge station like KOST. People try this a lot. Next, we can clean up the call to sound better. We'll take out unnecessary pauses, phrases and sentences that don't add anything to the content, and generally make it flow better and sound more entertaining. In this case, I barely did anything. Just took out a couple pauses and breaths to make it move a little quicker.

    So cool! We had a VoxPro in the control room when I was in college (I studied radio broadcasting at Niagara College in Welland, Canada) but we never got the chance to really utilize it. I work in radio creative now, but if I ever get an opportunity to get behind the mic again, I sincerely hope there's a VoxPro there for me to play with 🔥

    • @Brucieee1
      @Brucieee1 10 місяців тому

      Yes, it's an excellent tool. Doesn't have the bells and whistles that a full digital audio workstation like Pro Tools does, but that's not what it's for. When you need to edit a simple piece of audio like a phone call or sound bite, and you need to do it FAST and then play it back FAST, Vox Pro with the dedicated controller surface is perfect.

    Why record the phone call, We do it LIVE

    • @Brucieee1
      @Brucieee1 10 місяців тому

      I've been burned a couple too many times with live phoners that went off the rails, and now would almost never put a live call on-air. The FCC imposes big fines for broadcasts that have what they consider "indecent" language. Completely different rules for streaming vs. broadcasting.

    • @Dancefmlivecom
      @Dancefmlivecom 10 місяців тому

      @Brucieee1 understand that, but that's the risk you take, I've always done it LIVE even on FM. That's what your fader is for

    Sherwood Schwartz was a greedy predator who got filthy rich from TBB and GI and NEVER shared the wealth with the actors who made the shows a success. The casts were underpaid while the shows were in production, and they were paid almost nothing in residuals. The reason he was so against 'The Brady Bunch Variety Hour' is because he was afraid they were going to make a nickel and he couldn't get his grimy hands on it. It's crooks like him that made the Hollywood television entertainment industry such a cesspool. No wonder Red Skelton fired him. Despicable man!!🤑

    The name wasn't immediately familiar, until I matched it with that voice, and by god, I do remember you! Bismarck had a bunch of memorable DJs back then, and you were one of them. Sadly, Bismarck has very few remaining, due to changing formats that leave no room for personalities to come through, apparently. Turning on the radio used to be exciting and interesting, and Y-93 was at one time THE radio station I'd be cruising Main Street and listening to.

    Oh man, I feel like I've gone back in time, hearing and seeing these familiar people once again. IIRC, I actually remember Bob Beck's first day on the job here. He referred to himself as "The new kid in town." It was VERY early in the morning and I was driving my 1979 Trans Am to work, and I remember thinking he was a funny guy. Not sure of the year, but based on the car I had, I'm guessing around 1981, though I could easily be wrong. I would have been 21 in that case, and those car payments would have been killing me, but I did actually pay that car off. And I'm rambling now.
